Travis Scott will play Manchester’s struggling Co-op Live venue in the summer | Ents & Arts News

Travis Scott has announced a gig at the struggling Co-op Live music venue despite ongoing problems that have led to the opening being postponed.

The US rapper will bring his Circus Maximus Tour to the arena Manchester on July 13 – one of 12 new dates in the UK and Europe announced on Tuesday.

This comes amid problems that have delayed the opening of the £365m Co-op Live venue.

The arena was scheduled to open with shows by comedians Peter Kay in April – but these were postponed due to performance testing falling behind schedulesaid the bosses.

The new music venue, set to be the largest in the UK when it opens with 23,500 seats, has announced it will now open on May 14, when British rock band Elbow are scheduled to perform.

Last week, the venue announced that it would be “taking a short break from events to fully ensure the safety of fans and artists attending the venue.”

American rapper A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie was canceled at the last minute the day before due to a “technical problem” during a sound check.

What happens to the Co-op Live Arena?

Tim Leiweke, chairman and chief executive of US-based venue operator Oak View Group, apologized for the delays and reached out to “all those affected” and said staff were working “incredibly hard” to get the building ready for May 14 make.

“As many of you know, the launch did not go as smoothly as we had planned and I know this has caused great disruption and frustration for thousands of people,” he said.

The problems began after a test event in April, which led to Co-op Live announcing it would have to postpone Kay’s stand-up shows. These were first postponed to a later date in April, before being postponed for a second time to May 23rd and 24th.

A performance by The Black Keys has also been postponed to May 15th. Rodrigo’s dates on May 3rd and 4th have been postponedwhile A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie’s May 1 performance took place three days later after being moved to the city’s AO Arena.

On May 2nd, an appearance by Keane scheduled for May 5th was postponed Several Take That concerts have also been postponed to the AO.

The Eagles, Nicki Minaj, Pet Shop Boys, Liam Gallagher, Pearl Jam, The Killers and Eric Clapton are among the big-name acts set to perform at the venue in the coming months, but so far only one test event from Rick Astley has gone ahead.

The arena’s general manager, Gary Roden, announced his resignation last month.

A Co-op Group spokesperson previously said: “Co-op is a sponsor and does not own or operate the venue and we have made it clear to Oak View Group, who are responsible for the building, that this will impact ticket holders must be treated as a priority.

“We are pleased that they will be putting appropriate plans in motion shortly.”

They added that security checks would be independently verified so that co-op members and other ticket holders “can be assured that the venue has the very highest security measures in place.”
