Everyday Wordle Tips

I’ve written a lot about Wordle – from covers his 1,000th word to my list of best introductory words to a helpful two-step strategy to news about controversial word changes. I even rounded up What I learned for a whole year playing the popular online word puzzle. So if you’re considering whether you need a concrete answer, you might try tips from one of these stories.

Do you still need a starting word? One person told me she simply looked around and chose a five-letter object she spotted as a starting word – such as COUCH or CHAIR. I tend to stick to the beginning words that contain the most commonly used letters in English words. I like TRAIN as a starter, although I have a friend who uses TRAIL. I read these people Use the financial term ROATEbut I like to use words that I actually know.

What is Wordle?

If you’ve read this far, you know how to play. You have six chances to guess a five-letter word, and the game gives you feedback as to whether the letters you guessed are in the puzzle and whether they are in the same place where you guessed them. The New York Times bought the game from creator Josh Wardle for seven-digit numbers in 2022. Wardle famously created the game for his partner and had her narrow down the 12,000 five-letter words in the English language to just 2,500, creating the database of answers. It was also handy that he has a name that harmonizes with “Word.”

A Times spokesperson told me that the first-ever Wordle will be published on June 19, 2021, and the newspaper celebrated the game’s 1,000th word on March 15th. Spoiler: The 1000th word was ERUPT. As in, “Dad will break out when the Wordle is so hard he loses his streak.”

There are other fun games in the Times Games stable. My The newest addiction is Connections, which I think is harder than Wordle. In this game you look at a grid of 16 words and try to divide them into four groups of related words. Sometimes the relationships between words are pretty obvious – like when there were four words that all started with rock bands, like “Rushmore” and “Journeyman.” (On the occasion of April Fool’s Day, the connections got a little cheeky, with one All emoji puzzle. Some players did NOT find this funny.)

Spelling bee is also a popular Times game. And there’s a new game that’s still in beta, strandswhat I’m trying to master.
