The latest Star Wars Acolyte trailer appears to reveal the series’ big bad

Disney’s newest war of stars show, The Acolyteis just a month away on Disney Plus and the latest trailer suggests that the show will pick up on a thread followed by Rian Johnson Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi moved on in 2017: Is the Jedi Order actually that good?

Set long before the events of war of stars prequel trilogy, The Acolyte sees High Republic era Jedi Master Sol (Lee Jung-jae) investigates a series of murders (involving at least one Jedi). Today’s trailer reveals that the mysterious, black-clad Mae (Amandla Stenberg) is a former student of his and it appears she is a likely suspect in the murders. It also reinforces the idea that This will be a particularly dark series.

It also introduces a zipper-faced villain whose red lightsaber comes to life in a foggy jungle, apparently about to battle Sol. It’s a mystery who wears the scarred helmet, which bears more than a passing resemblance to the one Kylo Ren wore in recent years war of stars Trilogy. Maybe it’s the big bad of the series, or maybe it’s just a scary dream Sol is having. Or perhaps Disney is preparing to tell us the Sith legend “Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise,” which Emperor Palpatine bestowed upon Anakin Skywalker war of stars Episode III.

One thing’s for sure: whoever this villain is, he’s carrying on the long tradition of the Sith (assuming they are) and making the Jedi look like complete idiots. The AcolyteS Stars include Carrie-Anne Moss, Rebecca Henderson, Dean-Charles Chapman and Joonas Suotamo. It premieres on June 4th with two episodes on Disney Plus.
